Following a robust community-driven campaign in opposition to a controversial condo development, KB Homes and the City of Santa Cruz have reached compromise that will protect the ancient Native American burial site. The Knoll, an area where the remains of an Ohlone child were found earlier this summer, will be preserved for Ohlone Indians. The community group, Save the Knoll, delivered more than 3,000 signatures from Change.org supporters at two public meetings, in addition to holding several rallies, marches, and public events.

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT

We implore the City of Santa Cruz to honor the wishes of Ohlone descendant Ann Marie Sayers by taking action to permanently protect the ancient village and burial site on the Knoll at Branciforte Creek (5 Isbel Dr.) KB Home currently plans to build seven homes, driveways and a new road within the known 6,000 year old cultural and archaeological site. Out of respect for the original people of this land, the sacredness of a burial ground, and the rich cultural and historical value of the area, we ask that you not allow any more digging or construction to occur on the Knoll. Thank you.

Please remember: you are fighting over how to spend our money. We the People pay 33.7% of the Federal Fund while corporatio­ns pay 7.2%. Many corporatio­ns pay no taxes at all. Yet your entire focus during this budget battle has been on how much to hurt the people. We did not cause the recession, the deficit, or the national debt. We know this, and we need you to know that we are aware of a corrupt system in which corporatio­ns spend their vast wealth to lobby and manipulate you. We know that's why the tax code so unjustly burdens us while favoring them. We know this is why Elizabeth Warren and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau are under attack from the US Chamber of Commerce and other powerful lobbyists. We know that is why your policies reward multinatio­nal corporatio­ns, including those that DID cause the recession, with bailouts, bonuses, and tax benefits. As you wrangle over how much to hurt our quality of life and jeopardize our future, consider ways to create jobs and invest in our future. Congress should work together on how to help us, not fight over how to hurt us.

Instead of creating jobs and solving the problems of middle-class working families, some state politicians are in a real state of denial. They're saying "Thank you" to the corporate CEOs who financed their 2010 election victories by pushing legislation to cut good jobs, lower wages, threaten job safety and weaken unions.

In state after state, newly elected Republican legislators and governors are playing politics as usual by launching a coordinated attack on working families designed to swell already-record-size corporate profits and keep those CEO bonuses coming. These politicians aren't offering up their own pay or pensions—they want working families to bear the burden.
